Quick CAFM Overview

CAFM or Computer Aided Facility Management is the linking of data to drawings.  This link is bi-directional, that is you can search for a particular room in a facility and have the system locate the drawing it is on and highlight its location, this is what we see in the attached graphic.

We can also view a drawing and click on a space to see the data associated with it, which could include the accurate area in square feet, the type of room, its use, its ownership, the person or persons who occupy it, even the details about the assets located in the space.

The data associated with a space in many cases is also linked to other databases in the organization, the common link is to the HR system. A batch sub-set of personnel information is often sent to the CAFM system on a scheduled basis, say once a day.  This provides a very up to date view of who is sitting where and what department do they belong to.

Additionally the CAFM plan can highlight what spaces belong to which department and what is the annual charge back based on the actual space used plus a percentage of shared spaces such as lobbies, cafeterias, conference rooms etc.
