Linking drawings to databases is at the very core of the iDN system, areas are depicted by closed polylines on a unique layer in a floor plan CAD drawing.  Each space is issued a unique identifier such as 101, in combination with the floor ID of 01 and the building ID or code of 123AW there is now a unique database record for a space of a certain size located in a certain building: 123AW-01-101 is now the multi part primary key for everything that happens with or in the space.
